For removal of oil sump, front axle support must be lowered.
There is no need to perform a front axle alignment check.
Moving engine hood into assembly position:
The following work must be carried out with a second person assisting. Work instruction applies to left and right sides.
Hold engine bonnet/hood.
Raise clamps (1) on both sides and slide upwards.
Unhook dampers (2) on left and right from engine hood.
Raise engine bonnet/hood.
For securing purposes, insert M8 screw (1) into engine hood hinges (2) on left and right.
Remove intake filter housing upper section with air-mass flow sensor.
Instructions apply to removing and installing both air ducts on left and right.
Release retaining clips (1).
The air ducts can brake at the firewall if not carefully removed and installed.
Carefully turn air duct (2) upwards so that it is no longer locked in firewall. Pull air duct (2) forwards and lift out.
Unfasten guide tube on right timing case cover.
Release nuts on engine mounts on left and right.
Fit special tool 00 0 200 to special tool 00 0 201 / 202 / 204 / 208 and attach.Note:
Supports of special tool 00 0 208 must rest on screws in side walls.
Attach special tool 11 0 260 to special tool 00 0 200.
Suspend engine only from suspension lugs at front and rear designed for this purpose.
Tighten the screws (1 and 2).
Raise engine with special tool 00 0 200 approx. 6 to 8 mm.
Remove A/C compressor drive belt, refer to 11 28 050. Remove alternator drive belt, refer to 11 28 010.
Remove vane pump.
Lines remain connected.
Release belt tensioner on oil sump.
Release A/C compressor support bracket on oil sump.
Unfasten guide tube for dipstick on oil sump.
Insert O-ring and washer in oil sump bore.
Unfasten return line from oil sump.
Tightening Torque, refer to Technical Data 11 42 5AZ:

Unfasten steering spindle from steering gear.
This task is described in the work step Removing and installing steering gear, refer to 32 13 060.
Remove lower oil sump section, refer to 11 13 020.
Remove oil circuit changeover valve, left and right, refer to 11 13 540 / 11 13 550. Remove oil pump, refer to 11 41 000.
Release coolant line bracket on front axle support.
Brace front axle support with special tool 00 2 030 in conjunction with special tool 31 2 220.
Release front axle support on engine carrier and lower approx. 60 mm, refer to 31 11 001.
Unfasten screws inside oil sump.
Unfasten screws to sealing cover.
Release remaining screws in upper oil sump section.
Detach holder for battery positive lead and starter motor plug connection from upper oil sump section.
Remove upper oil sump section.
Sealing faces clean and free of seal debris.
Coat engine block at gap to end cover and to timing case cover with Drei Bond 1209 sealing compound (refer to BMW Parts Service).
- Replace gasket
- Install oil sump
- Install all screws in the oil sump
- Fit screws in transmission end without preload
- Tighten down screws at engine end
- Tighten down screws at transmission end
Pull unrefined oil line (1) and governing line (2) out of upper oil sump section.
Replace and slightly oil O-rings (1) and (2).
Do not shear O-rings off at edge of housing.
