Remove complete air duct for alternator.

Remove fan with special tools 11 5 030 and 11 5 040.

Important!
Left-hand threads.
With special tool 11 5 030, counter-hold belt pulley and release cap nut of coolant pump.
Remove fan impeller with fan coupling from coolant pump and remove together with fan cowl, refer to 17 11 031

Installation note:
Tighten fan with special tool 11 5 040.
Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 11 52 1AZ .

Note:

Tightening torque 40 Nm corresponds to 30 Nm on scale on torque wrench.
Remove cylinder head cover, refer to 11 12 000 Remove spark plugs, refer to 12 12 011

Removal:

Removal of VANOS adjusting unit is described separately from installation. Assembly sequence for removal and installation is different.

Remove oil pressure line.

Disconnect plug connection of solenoid valve.

Remove suspension lug.

Remove cable duct.

Pull off plastic cover for inlet camshaft.

Turn engine in normal direction of rotation until cam tips of inlet and exhaust camshafts of cylinder No. 1 point toward each other.

Remove dust guard from dowel hole.

Secure crankshaft in the TDC setting with special tool 11 2 300.

Important!

Remove special tool 11 2 300 before attempting to start the engine.

Remove stud bolts.

Secure camshafts with special tool 11 3 240.

Release screw plugs.

Slacken sprocket screws of exhaust camshaft.

Press down chain tensioner at top and lock with special tool 11 3 290

Unscrew nuts.

Version with cup spring

Place special tool 11 5 490 on exhaust camshaft sprocket.

Use special tool 11 5 490 to turn sprockets with secondary chain clockwise and at the same time pull off VANOS adjusting unit.

Version without cup spring

Note:

If the engine has the version without cup spring, the VANOS adjusting unit can be removed without special tools.

Remove VANOS adjusting unit.

Installation:

Installation of VANOS adjusting unit is described separately from removal. The assembly sequence differs between removal and installation.

Version with cup spring

Turn sprockets and secondary chain clockwise to limit position with special tool 11 5 490.

Version without cup spring

Note:

If the engine has the version without cup spring the special tool is not necessary.

Turn sprockets and secondary chain clockwise to limit position.

Push back splined shaft of adjusting unit (1) to limit position in housing (2).

Observe fitting bushes (1).

Seal contact edges of mating face between cylinder head and VANOS adjusting unit with Drei Bond 1209 sealant, (refer to BMW Parts Service).

Replace gasket.

Position VANOS adjusting unit.

Turn splined shaft (1) until internal gearing engages.

Version with cup spring

Seat special tool 11 5 490 on exhaust camshaft.

Turn chain and sprockets counter-clockwise with special tool 11 5 490 until splined shaft engages in internal gearing of camshaft sprocket (2).

Important!

It is important to ensure that the FIRST suitable tooth engages.

Version with cup spring

Slide VANOS adjusting unit toward cylinder head.

Insertion of the helical toothed splined shaft into the helical toothed camshaft sprocket causes the chain with sprockets to turn counter-clockwise.

Assist chain and sprockets to turn counter-clockwise with special tool 11 5 490.

Version without cup spring

Turn chain with wheels by hand anticlockwise until splined shaft engages in internal gearing of camshaft sprocket (2).

Important!

It is important to ensure that the FIRST suitable tooth engages.

Version without cup spring

Slide VANOS adjusting unit toward cylinder head.

Insertion of the helical toothed splined shaft into the helical toothed camshaft sprocket causes the chain with sprockets to turn counter-clockwise.

Assist chain with sprockets to turn counter-clockwise by hand.

Tighten VANOS adjusting unit.

Remove special tool 11 3 290.

Important!

Spring pressure

Unfasten screw connection (3).

Remove spring (2) and piston (1).

Insert special tool 11 3 390 in chain tensioner sleeve (1).

Seat adjusting screw against tensioning rail.

Pretension tensioning rail with special tools 11 3 390 by turning adjusting screw with special tool 00 9 250 or standard torque wrench to 1.3 Nm.

Tighten sprocket of exhaust camshaft in two passes. Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 11 31 3AZ .

Remove special tool 11 3 240.

Remove special tool 11 2 300.

Note:

If work has been carried out on the camshafts, turn the engine through two full revolutions in the normal direction of rotation and then recheck the camshaft settings.

Locate crankshaft at firing TDC of cylinder No. 1 with special tool 11 2 300.Important!

Do not crank engine in reverse direction.

Remove special tool 11 2 300 before attempting to start the engine.

Seat special tool 11 3 240 on camshafts.

Camshaft adjustment is OK if special tool 11 3 240 is seated on the cylinder head without a gap.

Remove special tool 11 3 240.

Relieve tension on special tool 11 3 390 and remove.

Insert chain tensioner piston (1) so that guide lugs engage in tensioning rail.

Insert spring (2) and screw connection (3) with new sealing ring. Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 11 31 7AZ .

Insert screw plugs with new sealing rings. Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 11 36 3AZ .

Check operation of VANOS adjusting unit.

Install special tool 11 3 450 with banjo bolt of oil pressure line.

Connect compressed air (2 … 8 bar).

Measure distance (x) between secondary chain tensioner and edge at camshaft sensor gear.

Note down distance 1.

Connect special tool 12 6 410 to cable connection for VANOS solenoid valve.

Connect positive clip to positive battery connection point.

To adjust camshaft, connect negative terminal to vehicle ground.

Important!

Reversing the polarity of the special tool causes irreparable damage to the diode installed in the VANOS solenoid valve. The solenoid valve remains operational, but voltage peaks occur and can cause malfunctions in the on-board electrical system.

Measure distance (x) between secondary chain tensioner and edge at camshaft sensor gear.

Note down distance 2.

Calculate displacement:

Distance 2 – distance 1= displacement.

Important!

The VANOS adjusting unit will have to be readjusted if displacement is less than 8.5 mm

Remove special tools 11 3 450 and 12 6 410.

Install cable channel.

Install suspension lug.

Install oil pressure line with new sealing rings. Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 11 36 2AZ .

Connect cable connection of solenoid valve.

Remove special tool 11 2 300 (TDC locating pin).
Assemble engine.
