Unhook pull rods (1) at ball heads on servomotor side only.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Setting throttles 1 and 2:

Prepare special tool kit 13 0 150:

Insert extension pin (1) into dial gauges.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Place dial gauge plate (1) on throttle body of cylinders 1 and 2. The dial gauge supports must rest on the side of the throttle body facing the cylinder head.

Tighten knurled screw (2) hand-tight.

Insert dial gauges (3) with inserted extension pins into supports on dial gauge plate until small needles point roughly to 5 and large needles point upwards.

Tighten knurled screws (4) hand-tight.

Caution!

If adjusting screw is difficult to move:

  1. Spray adjusting screw with suitable lubricating oil.
  2. Unscrew adjusting screw and then screw in again.

Work with care to avoid deforming the throttle lever.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Pull on pull rod until adjusting screws are easily accessible.

Screw in adjusting screws (1) between throttle body 1 and 2 and throttle body 2 and 3 only until it is possible to insert fork-shaped shim between locking washer of spring bolt and throttle lever.

Work with care to avoid deforming the throttle lever.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Insert fork-shaped shims between locking washer of spring bolt and throttle lever of both adjusting screws.

Note:

Insert shim so that there is a sufficient gap to adjoining components when throttles are closed. To prevent the measurement result from being distorted, it is essential to ensure that the shim can move freely.

Turn adjusting screws back (end of adjusting screw flush with thread insert).

Note:

Throttle pairs 1/2 and 3/4 are thus disengaged from each other (adjusting screw between throttle bodies 2 and 3).

Throttles 1 and 2 are likewise disengaged from each other (adjusting screw between throttle bodies 1 and 2).

Throttle 1 can be opened a little without throttle 2 being moved and vice versa.

When throttle 2 is opened slightly, throttles 3 and 4 are not moved and vice versa.

Check disengagement while observing dial gauges and/or throttle levers.

Note:

If the still engaged throttles 3 and 4 are opened a little and the dial gauge immediately indicates movement in throttle 2 in the process, the adjusting screw between throttle bodies 3 and 4 is unscrewed too far.

Screw in adjusting screw between throttle bodies 3 and 4 until error of insufficient disengagement is rectified.

If now the small needle does not point to 5 and the large needle does not point upwards, correct the height of the dial gauges slightly.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Turn dials on both dial gauges so that large needles point to zero.

Note:

Note position of small needles (roughly at 5).

Failure to comply may result in an error of a full needle revolution.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Raise throttle levers (1) between throttle bodies 1 and 2 slightly and then release several times to check whether large needles always point to zero.

If necessary, correct dials.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Screw in adjusting screw (1) between throttle bodies 1 and 2 until fork-shaped shim is free.

Remove shim.

Note:

Fork-shaped shim at adjusting screw between throttle bodies 2 and 3 remains inserted.

Unscrew adjusting screw between throttle bodies 1 and 2 again until both large dial gauge needles point to zero and small needles are in previous position (roughly at 5).

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Raise throttle levers (1) between throttle bodies 1 and 2 slightly and then release several times to check whether large needles always point to zero.

Caution!

Do not press throttle levers shut.

If necessary, make correction by turning adjusting screw.

Caution!

Permissible tolerance is ± 0.01 mm per dial gauge (space between two strokes on large dial).

Check position of small needles.

Setting throttles on cylinder bank 5-8: Note:

Set the throttles on cylinder bank 5-8 in the same way as those on cylinder bank 14.

Begin setting on throttle pair 8/7.

The description of setting throttles 1 and 2 also applies to setting throttles 8 and 7.

The description of setting throttles 3 and 4 also applies to setting throttles 6 and 5.

Synchronizing cylinder banks with each other: Note:

This synchronization must be carried out if the:

  1. pull rod has been replaced
  2. throttle actuator has been replaced

Note:

Remove the sealing flange so that it is possible to measure the full throttle opening (when setting the full load adaptation stop) with a standard slide caliper.

Remove sealing flange for intake air manifold on left (cylinders 5 to 8), refer to 11 61 056.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Position dial gauge plates on throttle body of cylinders 2 and 3 and throttle body of cylinders 6 and 7. Mount dial gauges in dial gauge plate supports for measuring at throttle bodies 3 and 6.

If necessary, press pull rods off ball heads on servomotor side.

Note:

To simplify synchronization, correct height of dial gauges in such a way that large needles point upwards.

Turn dials on both dial gauges so that large needles point to zero.

Gently open and close each throttle bank several times to check if the large needles are always pointing to zero.

If necessary, correct dials.

Caution!

After unclipping pull rods on throttle side, return throttles slowly to stops.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Note:

If the pull rod length has to be checked or adjusted or the pull rod has to be replaced, press the pull rod off the ball head on the throttle side. Open throttles to do so. Work carefully, do not bend throttle lever.

Pull rod length (center distance of ball sockets) is:

  1. Non-adjustable pull rod (cylinder bank 1-4): 131.7 ± 0.4 mm
  2. Adjustable pull rod (cylinder bank 5-8): 133 ± 0.8 mm (presetting measurement)

Due to tolerances, the adjustable pull rod is installed on some vehicles for both cylinder bank 1-4 and cylinder bank 5-8. Further procedure for such vehicles, refer to 13 54 …

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Clip in pull rod (1) on throttle and servomotor sides.

Clip in adjustable pull rod (2) on throttle side and rest against ball head on servomotor side. If necessary, correct length of adjustable pull rod (2) by turning hexagon head so that ball socket is centrally aligned to ball head.

Then clip in adjustable pull rod (2) on ball head on servomotor side.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Note:

Because of the closing force of the return spring in the servomotor, one or both dial gauge(s) can display a slight deviation from zero (approx. 0.01 mm). Do not correct gauge dials.

Connect servomotor to engine wiring harness.

Activate servomotor by means of DIS Tester or MoDiC to specified value 1 %.

Caution!

Do not open throttles by hand.

Servomotor shaft with twin lever would thus receive a different radial position. This would result in an incorrect measurement result and incorrect throttle setting.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

When the servomotor is activated at 1 %, throttles 3 and 6 are opened to such an extent that the dial gauges indicate a change between 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm. Check whether both dial gauges indicate the same value.

If necessary, turn hexagon head (1) on adjustable pull rod (cylinder bank 5-8) slightly until both dial gauges indicate the same opening value for throttles 3 and 6.

Enter specified value of 0 % and re-enter specified value of 1 %. Check whether both dial gauges indicate the same opening value for throttles 3 and 6.

Deviation between both dial gauges must be less than 0.03 mm.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Adjusting full-load adaptation stop:

Activate servomotor until throttles are fully open and stop screw (1) rests against stop lug.

Performing throttle basic setting on engine BMW S62

Turn stop screw to set measurement (A) of 24.2 mm ± 0.5 mm.

Carry out measurement on all throttles on cylinder bank 5-8.

Activate servomotor several times and check whether measurement (A) is in tolerance range on all 4 throttles.

Note:

Throttles 5 to 8 are opened here beyond the vertical position.

Throttles 1 to 4 open noticeably less. Do not correct.

Note:

If measurement (A) = 24.2 mm ± 0.5 mm cannot be adjusted, the non-adjustable pull rod must be replaced by an adjustable pull rod and the supplementary work carried out, refer to 13 54 …

Caution!

As the engine wiring harness is only partially mounted, fault messages are stored in the DME control unit.

Remove sealing flange for intake air manifold on left (cylinders 5 to 8), refer to 11 61 056. Assemble engine.

Note:

Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Check stored fault messages.
Rectify faults.
Now clear the fault memory.
