Gas and GR Bowden cable BMW E31, E32, E34, E36, E38

00350501/0797

US models

Situation: The gas Bowden cable and the Bowden cable of the cruise control system (GR) on the

affected vehicles can break at the throttle valve end piece in the event of extreme environmental influences (e.g. as a result of road salt additives).

In the event of the throttle valve end piece breaking, there is a danger that vibrations could cause the end piece to become detached from the elbow or from the Bowden cable mantle. The Bowden cable can then no longer return

to its initial position.

are fitted with a metal ring at the throttle valve end. Figure 1 (elbow version) and Figure 2 (straight version) show the location of the metal ring.

On models with the M60/M62 engines, it is necessary to remove the noise insulation cover from the intake manifold.

Even if the end pieces have already broken, it is sufficient to fit the steel spring clips – it is not necessary to replace the Bowden cables.

  • Bowden cables without the metal ring are OK. No steel spring clip is required.
  • On Bowden cables with a metal ring , the appropriate steel spring clip should be fitted (see Figures 3 and 4) Steel spring clip (long version) for Bowden cables with elbow:

Note:

Short version steel spring clips (approx. 35 mm long) are only to be used on Bowden cables without elbow. Here, it should be ensured that the double shackle of the clip (see Figure 4, position 2) is clipped to the Bowden cable mantle.
